Everex has announced the pricing and availability details for the Cloudbook. The Eee-PC competitor will cost $399 and will be available at Wal-Mart stores on January 25th.
The Cloudbook is about the same size and shape as an Eee PC, sporting a 7 inch display and weighing just 2 pounds. But under the hood, The Cloudbook sports a 1.2Ghz VIA processor, 512MB of RAM and a 30GB HDD, making the Cloudbook look a bit more like a standard computer in the specs department than an Eee PC which packs a 900Mhz Celeron processor and just 4 or 8GB or solid state storage.
Don't get me wrong, I loves me some solid state storage. One of the advantages of the Eee PC is that it boots quickly and quietly and is much more responsive than you would expect a device with a slow Celeron processor to be thanks to that super-speedy disk. But I can totally see why some folks might prefer a similar device with far more storage, even if it packs moving parts which are easier to break.
The Cloudbook also includes WiFi, a DVI port, a 4-in-1 card reader (as opposed to the Eee PC which has just an SD slot), a 1.3MP webcam, and a 4 cell battery which Everex claims will get you five hours of battery life. I'll believe that when I see it.
The Cloudbook ships with the gOS operating system, which is a custom version of Ubuntu designed to play nicely with online services like Google Docs & Spreadsheets. But it should be pretty easy to load alternative operating systems onto a Cloudbook if you've got a USB CD-ROM drive or the time and effort to create "LiveCD" on a flash drive.
